This is a list of battles fought between the years 3GA008 and 3GA012 between Rilia, Maela, Ladusia, and Tysoulia. Battles will be organized into 'theaters' such as the Rilian-Maelan front, and Tysoulian-Maelan front. Sieges will be included. Skirmishes are omitted.

List will be formatted in such: "Year: ( (S) = Naval engagement) Siege(or Battle) of XXXX (offender) (offender numbers versus defender numbers) (offender victor = O, offender defeat = X) (offender-defender casualties)"

Engagements within the Coldwoods are compacted (meaning, place of battle not listed), with the exception of consequential population centers and sieges.

Numbers may wildly vary due to reinforcements, disease outbreaks, other deaths, and free-companies. Tysoulian and Maelan divisions were also subject to redeployment elsewhere.

Prospects of "magicka-superiority" or "magic-superiority" gained traction after 3GA000 in Runic security competition. As the various states of the Runic sub-continent moved to maximize their share of relative power among neighbors. An idea revolving around the prospect of one singular country; maintaining the most formidable force of Descendants with mass-magicka potential, with no other state being capable to challenge it, or return equally swift destruction upon the enemy. An obvious case of this would be Rilia during the rule of the Tyrelus. However this was only achieved after their victory over Maela during the first continental war of 3GA008, who under the Gold Road Council achieved magicka-superiority some time into their governance of the Silver State. Maela at this period is estimated to have maintained a Descendant force upwards to five times the amount of Rilia and Tysoulia combined.

It is important to note that Maela feared Tysoulia more than Rilia, thus imploring Maela to conquer and smash the Tysoulian state out of existence; as Maelan generals stated to their superiors; "except indefinite; their shy time in the mud we can ill afford, lest they congregate to confront the unquestionable preeminence of our innocent".

An especially dangerous prospect, indeed; magic-superiority turns a countrys lawmakers so confident, that their hopes of victory against a larger foe, increases several folds. Explaining why policy makers of Maela, despite lesser latent, and military power, chose to conquer Rilia, during the rule of Lasardus; a proven military marvel; whose counterpart in Maela had long since succumbed after the Cardinal War. Furthermore, the Oak of Skovanai, sovereign of the Bovans, and dictator of Khois Yvanois; Khruger Soi, had likewise garnered the reputation as a ruthless military leader. Formerly one of the distinct few war-lords (of Hannia, central Rune's Eris) of the late Yvan Empire, Khruger accrued the faith of the Tyso-Yvan army, by decisively defeating the eastern invaders during the War in the Woods of 2GA994.

Still Maela remained confident, however not simply because of magic-superiority. Because the Tysoulian army was perceived to be a brittle structure, prone to strong-men generals who surely would take the same path of Khruger once the war turned sour. Silver State forces were tasked to strike fast and hard, in order to break Tysoulian morale and instigate a mass-route. Tysoulian forces did get beaten bloody by the swift and organized advances made by Maela; but it did not cause the Tysoulians to shatter, to the dismay of the Maelans. Lasardus and the Rilians as well, expected Tysoulia to receive the brunt of the Maelan forces, and thus opted for a defensive posture and wait for Maela and Tysoulia to bleed each-other white. A brief Rilian offensive took place at the beginning of the war by Rilia, because they feared Maela would conquer and dominate Tysoulia. Once that prospect became less evident, the brunt of the Rilian army was ordered to garrison along the Jeering river, with minor forces scattered about Hannia and greater Hannia.

This act did not go unnoticed by Khruger, and Tysoulian policy makers; who all felt that they were taking on a common enemy all by themselves. Giving wake to a rift in Tysoulian-Rilian relations once the war had ended. And to rub salt on the wound; Rilia had struck a deal with Maelan lords in a peace deal, without the consent of Tysoulia. A deal mentioning minor Tyso-Maelan border adjustments, and one-third of the war-reparations to Tysoulia. Due part because Rilia did not want Tysoulia to dominate Maela. Rilia of course, gaining the most, by creating a satellite state in former Ironflood lands. As for why Tysoulia did not enter negotiations with Maela, without Rilian consent; once it became clear that the Maelan offensive in Tysoulia had stalled and was beginning to fail, Maela did sue for peace. However the concessions the Gold Council was offering did not get approved by the other great-duchies and nobility. Who resented the idea of the Tysoulians carving into the Maelan heartland (admission of defeat to an inferior people). Further; at the height of the Maelan offensive did Tysoulia offer Maela concessions in the Coldwoods, however that too was refused, now by the Maelans. Because they believed they could gain more power and leverage on Tysoulia, by continuing the war.

Magic-superiority is not a be all end all position; as Maela in the war of 3GA008 was defeated and conquered by Rilia and allies. Tysoulia as noted; was the superior threat as perceived by Maela in the region. Despite Tysoulian army strength as perceived by Maela. Because Tysoulian Descendant populations far exceeded that of Rilia. Tysoulia was far more likely to deploy an equally sized Descendant force that could counter Maela. Opting Gold Road lawmakers to dedicated a large portion of their mass-magicka divisions to the Southern Coldwoods, where they then became bogged down in a protracted conflict with Tysoulian forces, who now deployed their own mass-magicka Descendant fighters.

An example of Maela flexing their magic-superiority, was at the sacking of Last Heart in Argakai, during the war of 3GA008; where Vaadash'i mass-magicka wielders flattened the city from a distance of between five-hundred, to eight-hundred meters; subsequently damaging portions of the Conquest Road severely. Aware that Rilia was unable to return equal trauma at the time. Terrifying Argakai brass to the point of negotiating a separate peace with Maela, in an attempt to spare further Argevian cities, as well as the capital city.

Maelan-Rilian frontlines were especially gruesome (when they rarely entered combat); as both sides put out serious firepower by mass-magicka. Putting serious strain on two of the most professional and organized military forces of the time. Rilian naval forces subsequently faced serious threats of bombardment from inland; by Maelan Descendants.

Rima lacking the manpower to face Purtian forces head-on; opted to gain magic-superiority over Purtia. Riman policy in the case of a Purtian invasion; was to deploy their mass-magicka divisions from the port in Mede island, to the Purtian Stonelands; the heartland of the Purtian state. While Riman regulars were fighting in Thom Hills. Riman forces in the Stonelands would subsequently flatten every city in the region, and attempt to negotiate separate peace deals with the northern, and eastern cities. If impossible, opt the Riman forces in Purtia to incur as much trauma to the region as possible. Purtian policy makers were of course aware of this very real threat to their prosperity, and state as a whole; being a reason for their ties with the Marsinate of Ladusia.

Argakai before being ruled by external forces, understood the prospect of magic-superiority well before most centralized states. None of Argevias rivals at the time put any serious thought into the idea, thus possibly explaining Argevian expansionist policies up until the third Green Age. This however changed as Argakai began to dedicate large portions of their budget towards achieving superiority. Thus urging the likes of Maela to contest Argevian proliferation of Descendant forces. It is important to note that Bovani and possibly Skovani tribes in Tysoulia, fighting against Argevian colonization; may have sent mass-magicka potent Descendants to battle with the Argevians, being an extremely effective strategy against conventional forces. Prompting Argevia to figure out ways to counter them; by contracting their own Descendants to fight abroad. Be it against barbarians; or other states.

Ladusian-Rilian relations after the first continental war, were being actively strained by both sides attempting to outpace one another in mass-magicka forces. By the time of the second continental war of 3GA037; Ladusia is believed to have gained magic-superiority. As they finally garnered the confidence to confront the Belvedorians and Iron Empire Company' nosing in Hassayyik, and its waters. However by this point, many decision makers of the continent had lost confidence in magick-superiority. Mainly due to the events that transpired in the Supremacy war of 3GA008. Thus it may not have influenced the Ladusian decision to attack Rilia. Other causes, such as Rilian economic weakness, a return to balanced multi-polarity in the Runic system, and proliferating Ladusian naval forces over the years, are more worthy of scrutiny. Indeed, post-Neverlas think-tanks in general, were now nigh unanimous in the opinion that magick-superiority on its own, is not a viable strategy for survival, in Runic security competition.

One argument for magick-superiority after the Supremacy war, was that the lack of innovation in the Descendants role in war, led to inefficiencies within army units. Nullifying their ability to effectively break the enemy. Because often times, the Descendants fought beside regular units. Utilizing them instead for pincer attacks, sabotage, and other covert operations, to support the main force, could revolutionize the Descendants role in conventional war. A few states utilized Descendants for non-combat roles already, namely Rima and Rilia, who put Descendants in non-combat roles. Rima in particular had plans to deploy their Corax battalions, in a surgical strike against Purtia. In order to cripple Purtian capability to wage war. However, Riman Corax battalions constituted mainly of regular soldiers, not Descendants. And were first and foremost combat units. Ladusia had introduced a few reforms within its military a few years preceding the war with Rilia. Putting its Descendants in "cells" that fought independently outside the heat of combat, to support the primary force. Only one case is recorded of Descendants used in this fashion before Ladusia; the Turgic Horde during the Cardinal War of 2GA994. A similar strategy involves Asarite Seekers, who are sometimes organized into groups, to combat especially dangerous foes, and perform covert actions abroad.

A state utilizing its magick-superiority in this fashion could inflict extreme pain to the enemy, by infiltrating the adversary with Descendant cells to wreak havoc among the populace. Destroying vital infrastructure (namely roads, and bridges), in an attempt to destabilize the hostile country, and reduce its ability to transport soldiers. Common soldiers could achieve this task all the same, but Descendants fighters held more means to withstand an enemy assault, in the event of discovery. Descendants were also better suited to destroy structures, with their magicka. Stone structures in particular, were vulnerable to Descendants with potent magicka. As the explosions and force followed by it, shattered rock with relative ease.

Mass-Magicka

8 min read
Although Runic history, vast with tales of common man forwarding the geopolitical goals of their nation; utilizing steel, and arrow to accomplish the wills of their liege. Shadowing times when it was not Man, but Descendant, who waged war on the Runic continent. Their incandescent palms harboring concentration of the elements, to subdue, and annihilate. Truly deplorable, crime against human constitutions, to wage Descendant against Man armies in times of great strife. The delinquent soon facing the legal ire and total condemnation from his kin. For they had ordered the deployment of mass-magicka on the battlefields. Sons of Sinus draftees ushering it in great, perplexing, destruction. By dusk, the silence of an unsettling peace covets the revolutionized plain. Today a bog surrounded by a minor caldera.

Ill defined; mass-magicka (alternatively mass-magic, or massive magicka) encapsulates all forms of sorcery and trickery, bringing forth untold amount of destruction. During the march of the great Host, it was through mass-magicka that their measly force defeated their adversaries. Only defeated once the fighting stopped. Osker Oskeris the first, king of Argevia in 2GA926 paid the highest of prices to hire powerful Descendants from Hannia and Hemia, due to Argevia's low Descendant population and reluctance to enroll local Descendants, did they not take Argevian Descendants; for they would in time return to their homes with taste for blood, this meant little if they returned to say, Hemia, or Hannia, buck-passing the potential danger to other states. Argevia would later be condemned by Hannia and the Silver State for exporting Descendant fighters. Reaching its zenith in 2GA931. Hannia would secede in violent rebellion later in 2GA939, after the stand at Vesper river in 2GA938, with Hannian authorities refusing to take in former Descendant fighters of Argevia, coming from Skovania in the east. Accusing Argevia of implanting mercenaries with Argevian inclinations into their dominions, as to curb notions of secession among the brass.

Such accusations were immediately denied by Argevian policy makers. Nonetheless, Argevia could no longer afford their military expenditures by the time the Yvan's invaded, being outbid by the likes of Maela and Rilia (Belvedoria). Thus losing their potential leverage on neighbors such as Hannia. Amount of mass-magicka wielders were at most numbered in the one, to two-thousand, as disease and other ills shook the demographics of the continent, did their numbers also dwindle, sometimes into the low hundreds.

Mineral conjuration is considered mass-magicka, and is punishable by death for disturbing the supply of coin. Authorities would tirelessly analyze coin supply as to make sure the supply was not being tampered (check for signs of inflation). Especially after the Belvedorian annexation of the Ashgarden and acquisition of the islands' quarries. There were more baseless accusations than legitimate ones, especially in Purtian and Riman sphere's where prejudice against Descendants was particularly high. In truth, for a mass-magicka Descendant to conjure coin, a steady supply of rare minerals was required, although less was needed to mint coins than conventional methods. A third or two thirds the usual supply, depending on the experience of the Descendant.

Fear more than anything stemmed the tide of coin conjuration. West Empire Company (before, Bluewater Company) authorities would often engage in weeks of torture against suspected illegal coin suppliers, threatening families, tribes and communities to discover the illicit mint. Often in accordance to local legislation as the inflation was disastrous to Runic economies and could hamper a nations security prospects. Once discovered, the Company would most likely confiscate any minted coin, and stockpile it, keeping it from entering the Runic economies, thus avoiding mass-inflation. Initially requiring low effort, as illegally minted coins lacked much sophistication, they would later be almost identical to currencies such as the Rhin, Aurim, and Kungh. Demanding keen-eyes and tireless work.

Legislation and efforts notwithstanding, policy makers of the Hegemon grew infamous for several foiled plots, aimed to inflate the Purtian Kungh, utilizing both conventionally, and mass-magicka generated coins. Lasardus, whose rhetoric preached relative strength in Tyrelian, and indeed, Runic geopolitics, went to lengths to inflate the Riman fiscal house likewise. In hopes that Rima would grow increasingly dependent on Rilian economic aid, subsequently forcing both Rima and Purtia to downsize their own professional forces. Thus urging Rilia to downsize also, and invest less military resources in the region. This policy did not end with Helena assuming the throne of Rilia, who preached maximizing Rilian power above other states of the system, weakening the remaining sovereign states of Tyrelia, and increasing Rilian power, was a key part of Rilia's foreign policy during Helena's rule.

Rilia harboring such policies, lead to Ladusia threatening to embargo Rilia, swaying Rilian policy makers (but not Helena, necessarily) to reconsider applying an identical policy on the Marsinate of Ladusia. Fearing that Ladusia would employ its own Descendant population in an effort to break the economic system of the Runic Empire. Incidentally or not, following this political exchange, Ladusia held its own population census in 3GA033, including any Descendants (known as Mhasyyas in Ladusia) in the count. Initially questioning the Ladusian census, claiming it to be forged, or subject to failed southern bureaucracy, queen Helena grew convinced that an economic war against Ladusia would be devastating, and annulled her planned fiscal policies against the south.

However, this decision was not made exclusively because Rilia feared potential Ladusian attempts to inflate the Rhin -- questionable if Ladusia was even capable of producing the coins necessary to achieve fruitful results, as their mineral supplies were not on par with Rilian supply (at least on paper). It was made because Rilia relied on Ladusian food imports to sustain their subsidies intended for Hannia and Gemaria. Thus Rilian policy makers ultimately decided not to move against the hand that feeds them. Prompting Iron Empire Company policy makers to seek partners in Ladusian Hassayyik as to undermine the Ladusian foodstuff monopoly in the Runic Sea. An endeavor ultimately manifesting into the Second Continental War.

Early Third Age, Rilian legislation was instated as part of their initiative to end war in Hannia (Central Rune's Eris), banning deployment of mass-magicka by any country, or aristocracy. Helena Emporium would later ban Descendants from partaking in any conflict whatsoever, with terrible rate of enforcement. As Rilian economics had soured since the Maelan-Rilian war, facing high inflation (possibly due to aforementioned illicit minting operations - gone haywire), rising poverty line, and increasing domestic and external debts, further cumbered by a bloated military budget now in rise due to Helena's jingoist rhetoric, funneled by zealotry.

Past the Neverlas treaty, returning Rilia, and its former territories into a plethora of city states, duchies, and petty kingdoms, the banishment of mass-magicka from the battlefields of Man retained. Becoming imbued with Runic code of honor. Honor as a concept, can be muddied however, on occasion assuming a lesser or nonexistent role in Runic security competition.

Acts of unconventional or extraordinary healing (wound treatment through sorcery), is considered mass-magicka, notwithstanding, healers are highly sought after as they provide significant advantages above conventional physicians. With the likes of Purtia, and Argevia (after 3GA000) lobbying for their banishment from battlefields. Rima, although a rigorous supporter of legislation against mass-magicka, maintained Descendant healers among their ranks, mercenaries subsidized by the Hegemon, or Rilia, as to gain leverage over Purtia. An arrangement particularly awkward once Helena Emporium assumed the the throne of the Rilian Runic Empire. Riman Descendant healers were organized into Corax battalions, often among the most experienced fighters and the nobility. Riman healers were dubbed 'Crow heads' by Purtians, for their peculiar masks, depicting the countenance of a one-eyed raven.

Beokros in his venture to establish Mhesekai in 2GA985; employed both Descendant healers and minters to sustain his army. Utilizing his own nick for military strategy and organization, he proved a tough foe against the forces eight times his own (Silver State forces, Soulhouse and Fallenwood forces specifically, along with Yvan armies in the approximate regions). Further urging military reforms across the continent, in the form of improved organization and composition. Incidentally aiding the western armies against the Far-Eastern invaders of 2GA994.

Attempts to conjure sustenance using Descendants holds precedent. But thus far there is no known record of success in the effort. Reports of conjured foodstuff carrying with it offensive smells, and unpleasant texture; its nutritional value prompting swift emaciation, dominates the research. Thus policy makers of the continent opts to distance themselves from the prospect of unconditional food production. It is not unlikely that Runic policy makers may not even desire such, as the geopolitical implications would be immense.

Correction(s); Authorities were checking for signs of inflation, not deflation. Because the amount of coins in circulation were effectively inflating prices of goods in the Runic markets.
Mass-magicka potent Descendant populations subject to change.

There were no plots to deflate currencies, only to inflate them.

It is no surprise that latent power played a major role in the rise of several powers in Rilia. These charts explores the urban populations of Rilia sometime after the Neverlas treaty (3GA041.) And emphasizes the power these cities held during the prime of the Rilian Runic Empire. Note that the urban populations only constituted a small percentage of the general population, which was primarily rural. However high urbanization rates often meant access to high amounts of wealth; used to field larger armies that project hard-power into their neighbours, and thus spawn sprawling kingdoms or empires.

These charts do not mention numbers, instead they indicate the share of urban population in their respective regions.

The chart for the "Heartland" compares all the largest cities of Belvedoria. Stockton, as seen, practically dominates. And presents a huge disproportionate share of power in Belvedoria; largely biased towards Stockton and the Arch-Patron. This is no coincidence as the city is founded by the mouth of the Rhois river, and serves as a major port and market for the Tyrelian peninsula. Here none is up to the task of challenging Stockton any time soon. A large enough coalition may force Stockton into talks, but such an event would surely be a heavy burden on the coalition leaders who would have to concede vast amounts of influence to their allies, to keep the alliance from shattering. A heavily justified cause may be enough to sway most of the lesser cities to move against Stockton. But it is noted that even when Belvedoria was invaded by the Certrurians and their allies, to cast the Ladusians out of Tyrelia; did the Belvedorian cities not join the northern coalition, and instead fought with Stockton (ruled still by the Arch-Patron, but de-facto a puppet of the Marsin in Padesh.)

Gronland as the region was called by bureaucrats of the Runic Empire; encompasses most cities located in Central-Rilia. The urban populations  of Tommen and Shorden, albeit smaller than that of Rilianos; formerly known as Crown Hold, as it was called prior to the Neverlas treaty, remains a major player in the region. However the population of Rilianos faces major emigration issues as the city was severely traumatized by Ladusian plunderers, who destroyed most of the city infrastructure and seized any wealth remaining in the city. New lords of Rilianos will have to contend with losing thousands upon thousands of inhabitants of their city on an annual basis. This presents an opportunity for cities such as Shorden and Tommen to challenge their former overlords in Crown Hold by allying with each other and other cities wishing to curb Rilianos.

Riljett encompasses the administrative region surrounding exclusively the Hightower and the city of Hollor located on the Conquest Road. Although at first sight appearing relatively even in urban and power distribution, the Hightower acts as the bureaucratic capital of northern Rilia. And serves as the home of thousands of well educated and wealthy citizens. Hightower Outer represents citizens living in the surroundings of the Hightower structure; located in the center of the city. Hightower Inner represents permanent citizens living inside the Hightower structure, often the wealthiest.

Next is a chart of Certruria, displaying all the major strategic cities of the region, that is located in the north-western borderlands of Rilia with access to the Raider Sea.

Here we see a much more balanced distribution of urban populations. Take note however, that Certruri and Cerce have been separated in this chart, and thus represents two individual cities. The cities in truth has a unified bureaucratic system. Still, even when combined they do not make out a substantial majority in urban population. Only five other cities constitute a similar concentration urban population, and may easily present a coalition to curb Certruri and Cerce. Unlike Belvedoria, power share in the region is not divided between tens of other cities.  Thus the leaders of Certruria have often been forced to concede to the demands of their vassals and heavily decentralize in the process.

Here all the previously seen charts have been merged into one. Displaying the proportions of urban population distribution across Rilia. Note Stockton once again assuming a significant amount of the urban populations. But also Rilianos, the former capital of the Rilian Runic Empire. Together these two cities formed the basis of power in Rilia, and later most of Rune's Eris. Both cities were traumatized however by the Ladusian forces invading Rilia during the Continental War. However population developments in Stockton have remained relatively stable unlike in Rilianos. It is also noted that Rilianos was significantly more damaged than Stockton, and Belvedoria in general. Perhaps tied to the decision by the Ladusian Marsins not to sack Belvedoria for fear of uprisings; further damaging Belvedoria, possibly traumatizing the country for decades to come could potentially make it a poor buffer-state for Ladusia, upsetting the Belvedorian lords would also not benefit Ladusia.

Viewed as the successor company to the Bluewater Company of the Ashgarden; which formed in 3GA012 from external (Belvedorian) and domestic (Aphriatus Confederacy member states) financial interests. Seeking to dominate western maritime commercial affairs, which had historically been under Ladusian or Purtian influence up until this point. The Bluewater and later West Empire Company were Trade Companies, operating in the western waters of the Runic Sea.

Bluewater was effectively absorbed into the Belvedorian economic sphere. Merchants from Belvedoria, wealthy from the rise of the Rhin (currency); purchased the majority of the Bluewater Company assets. Officially renaming the entity to West Empire Company in 3GA015.

Assets included in the Belvedorian purchases were the majority of the operable gold, silver, and bronze mines. It's noted that after 3GA015 the concentration of gold in gold coins such as the Belvedorian Rose (6 grams previously, 15 grams later) and Belvedorian Bellas coins increased significantly.

By the death of Lasardus Emporium in 3GA030; the West Empire Company constituted one-fifth of the Rilian total gross domestic product. With the Iron Empire Company in the east assuming roughly another one-fifth.

The primary exports and sources of revenue of the West Empire Company were: Rare materials (Gold, Silver, Bronze, etc.) Wine. Maritime protection. Privateers (de-facto.)

In the Neverlas treaty of 3GA041 Red Empire bureaucrats specifically mentioned the seizure of West Empire assets, to the Ladusian state.
